The Illinois State Fair will be held on the Illinois State Fairgrounds today (Thursday) with a preview night beginning at 4 pm and runs through Sunday, August 20 from 7 am – midnight each day. Admission for the preview night is $5 for adults and $2 for senior citizens aged 60+ and children 12 and under are free. Normal admission beginning on Friday is $10 for adults (ages 13 – 59), free for children up to 12 and $3 for senior citizens (ages 60+). Parking is $5. The 2nd Annual Greehut Memorial Whiskey Baron Run will begin at the GAR Hall (416 Hamilton Blvd. in Peoria) on Saturday at 8 am. The course will take runners through important connections to African-American historic name and streets, as well as through homes built by the whiskey distillers, such as Captain Joseph Greenhut, who was the wealthiest whiskey baron in the U.S. and the benefactor of the GAR Hall. Civil War re-enactors will greet runners at the finish line and participants of age will receive a celebratory shot of whiskey. There will be an open house featuring local historical authors Ken Zurski, Judy Rosella Edwards, will be telling quick tales from Peoria’s past, and a fast-paced living museum with actors portraying Peoria icons such as Mayor Woodruff, Annie Malone, Thomas Lindsay, and Richard Pryor. The City of Peoria will host the area’s first Peoria Civic Hackathon at the Peoria Civic Center on Saturday beginning at 8 am in conjunction with the Ignite Peoria event. Engaging the local tech community for the purpose of innovating new civic tech solutions, teams of 2-7 participants will utilize City data while competing to create a website, app or other tool that could improve the lives of people who live, work, and play in the Peoria area. $1000 will be awarded to the first prize team and $500 will be awarded to the second prize team. The Annual Hummingbird & Bee Pollinator Festival will take place at Sommer Park (located at 6329 N Koerner Rd. in Edwards) on Saturday from 9 am – 1 pm. Admission is free for all ages, however for a small donation to the Illinois Audubon land acquisition fund, participants can “adopt” a hummingbird. The 2nd Annual Fight the Fight Addiction Awareness Walk will take place on Saturday at Mineral Springs Park (located at 1701 Court Street in Pekin) from 1 – 3 pm. Featuring speakers from the community, the walk around lagoon, information on addiction/recovery, a dove release/race and music, event t-shirts and hoodies will be available for purchase as well as free Naloxone & training.
